Focussed on developing international vision and business strategy, the International Strategy Development Programme (formerly the Global companies development programme) is designed to accelerate the global growth of companies.

Eligibility criteria

Companies should:

  • Have an ambitious top team with the vision and capacity to formulate and implement an international strategy
  • Be seeking to internationalise or increase the number of international markets in which they operate
  • Have a turnover of circa £2m or more, with significant potential for growth
  • Have their Head Office in Scotland or demonstrate that they are strategically controlled from Scotland (FDI clients)
  • Be committed to spending the time and resource to undertake the project and implement any action plan.

Description and how it can help

The International Strategy Development Programme has been designed to accelerate the international growth of ambitious companies. The main focus is to develop a sustainable international strategy having considered the various options available to the company. There will also be a focus on building management team capability within the company to ensure the strategy can be delivered.

Delivery

The Programme is delivered on an individual company basis and will involve the senior management team. Support is flexible with between 10 and 20 days consultancy support available to assist in developing an international strategy.

Content

The Programme can be summarised as:

  • Understanding the senior management vision for growing the business
  • Developing the international vision through a detailed evaluation of options available
  • Transforming the vision into a sustainable strategy
  • Testing the preferred strategy for robustness
  • Assessing and building the management team
  • Identifying key actions that must be delivered to move the company towards achieving their vision (Action plan)
  • Ensuring an implementation plan is in place to progress the key actions

Any costs included

Scottish Enterprise supports up to 50 per cent of consultancy costs.

Any partners or partnership working involved

The programme is managed by Scottish Enterprise.

Duration of the service

Flexible to suit company’s requirements but to be effective should be completed between 4 and 9 months.
